What is the difference between Indian and Foreign Lenses?

Both Indian and Foreign lenses are excellent. Indian lens manufacturing has picked up only in the last decade, and I am sure in the next decade would be considered at par with any lens in the market. There are specific differences, however.

Cost – The cataract lens price varies significantly between Indian and foreign lenses. Indian lenses are much cheaper, so cataract packages with Indian lenses are cheaper.
Some of the lenses are of different materials – Some materials are better for the eye than others.
Some of the lenses have different shapes, and some doctors are comfortable with some lenses compared to others.

So which is the best cataract lens?

As mentioned, this is a frequent question we get asked. I will start with an analogy. If someone were to ask you which is the best car available in the market, what would your answer be? Would your answer be the same as someone else in the family? I am guessing not. The reason is that it depends on so many factors and so too with lenses.

Each lens has its advantages or disadvantages, and there is no perfect lens.

Following are the factors which help in deciding which lens would be suitable for someone:

  1. The cost of the surgery package, which in turn depends on the cataract lens price.
  2. Associated retinal or diabetic eye disease
  3. Patients need to be glass free for both distance and near
  4. If patients have astigmatism in their current glasses
  5. Having an abnormally high power in their everyday glasses.

So, unfortunately, there is no one correct answer for this question. One has to choose a lens based on many things. Your doctor will help you, so don't worry.

How should I choose which cataract lens would be best for me?

After understanding the pros and cons of different cataract lenses, these would be the steps to follow.

  1. Your doctor will give you a choice of cataract lenses suitable for your eye.
  2. Think about what do you want. Would you like to be glass-free? On the other hand, would you want to wear glasses after your cataract surgery?
  3. Based on what you want, choose a lens.
  4. Once that is done, then look at the price. Is this something you can afford? If yes, then the decision is made.
  5. If not, then think of the previous lens amongst all those offered. And in that fashion, keep going lower till you are happy with the lens and the price.

You should know that lens choice will not increase or decrease cataract surgery complications apart from PCO.
