Best Cataract Lens

Which is the best cataract lens ?

When we advise patients to undergo surgery the next discussion we have are the lens options available. And that's when we get asked this Million dollar question.  Doctor, which is the best cataract lens and what the various cataract lens brands available.  Of course, the cataract lens price list is an equally common and important question that we are asked.  You could also directly jump to the cataract surgery prices in Mumbai.

When selecting a lens we have to look out for two things.  The power of the lens and the type of the lens.  The power of the lens is decided by performing a A Scan.  Here, we will continue to discuss the type of the lens.

What are cataract Lenses ?

These are lenses that are implanted in the eye after the cataract is removed.  They are also known as Intraocular lenses or IOLs.

What are the various Cataract Lens Brands in the market ?

There are innumerable cataract lens brands available in the market.  These lenses are manufactured in many countries. Like any other product, some are better known than others.  It would not be correct to say that some are bad lenses and some are good but yes there are differences.

It would not be possible to mention each and every cataract lens brand available and that's not even the idea.  Here are the names of some of the popular cataract lens brands and the idea behind this is that if you were to read this before or after your doctor consultation regarding the best lens choice for you, you might find names that your doctor mentioned and it may relieve some anxiety.  The brands mentioned below are the more popular ones or the ones we have used, and that does not necessarily mean that we use all or any of these lenses at this current point in time. We would advise you of a particular lens after a detailed eye examination and on what we feel is the best available lens for you at any given point in time.  Ofcourse you must knowthat the cataract lens price list varies quite significantly depending upon the lens chosen.  If you would like to know more about cataract surgery prices then visit cataract lens price in Mumbai.

Out of these Johnson and johnson and Alcon cataract lens brands are probably the most widely used the world over.  Recently the Eyhance lens by johnson and johnson has become very popular. The cataract lens price varies greatly amongst the different lenses.  The price of Alcon acrysof iq and technis are somewhat similar.  Multifocal lenses are much more expensive and trifocal are the most expensive.

We have mentioned Indian brands as the last three and that does not mean that they are inferior to the others.

What is the difference between Indian and Foreign Lenses ?

Both Indian and Foreign lenses are very good.  Indian lens manufacturing has picked up only in the last decade and I am sure in the next decade would be considered at par with any lens in the market.  There are certain differences, however.

Cost – The cataract lens price varies greatly between Indian and foreign lenses.  Indian lenses are much cheaper which is why cataract packages in which Indian lenses are used are much cheaper.
Some of the lenses are made of different materials – Some materials are better for the eye compared to others
Some of the lenses have different shapes and some doctors are comfortable with some shapes of lenses compared to others.

So which is the best cataract lens ?

As mentioned this is a very common question we get asked.  I will start with an analogy. If someone were to ask you which the best car available in the market what would your answer be?  Would your answer be the same as someone else in the family? I am guessing not. The reason is, that it depends on so many factors and so too with lenses.

Each lens has its own advantages or disadvantages and there is no perfect lens.

Following are the factors which help in deciding which lens would be good for someone:

  1. The cost of the surgery package and is partly linked to the cataract lens price.
  2. Associated retinal or diabetic eye disease
  3. Patients need to be glass free for both distance and near
  4. If patients have astigmatism in their current glasses
  5. Having an abnormally high power in their current glasses.

So unfortunately there is no one correct answer for this question.  One has to choose a lens based on many things. That being said your doctor will be able to help you so dont worry too much about it.

How should I choose which cataract lens would be best for me ?

After understanding the pros and cons of different cataract lenses these would be the steps to follow

  1. Your doctor will give you a choice of cataract lenses suitable for your eye
  2. Think about what do you really want.  Would you really like to be glass free ?  Would you on the other hand want to wear glasses after your cataract surgery ?
  3. Based on what you really want choose a lens
  4. Once that is done then look at the price.  Is this something you can afford.  If yes, then the decision is made.
  5. If not then think of the previous lens amogst all those that were offered to you.  And in that fashion keep going lower till you are happy with the lens and the price.

You should know that apart from PCO the choice of lens will not increase or decrease the complications that may occur in cataract surgery.
