Cataract Lens

More about cataract lenses

Which is the best cataract lens?

When we advise patients to undergo surgery, we subsequently discuss the lens options available. And that's when we get asked this Million dollar question. Doctor, which is the best cataract lens and the various cataract lens brands available? Of course, the cataract lens price list is an equally frequent and vital question that we get asked. You could also directly jump to the cataract surgery prices in Mumbai.

When selecting a lens, we have to look out for two things—the power of the lens and the type of the lens. The power of the lens is decided by performing A-Scan.  Here, we will continue to discuss the type of lens.

What are cataract Lenses?

Cataract lenses implantation in the eye is the last step of cataract surgery. They are also known as Intraocular lenses or IOLs.

What are the various Cataract Lens Brands in the market?

There are numerous cataract lens brands available in the market. These lenses come from many countries. Like any other product, some are more popular than others. It would not be correct to say that some are bad lenses and some are good, but there are differences.

It would not be possible to mention every cataract lens brand available, and that's not even the idea. Here are the names of some cataract lens brands. If you read this before or after your doctor's consultation regarding the best lens choice for you, you might find names your doctor mentioned, which may relieve some anxiety. The brands mentioned are popular ones or the ones we have used. That does not mean we use all or any of these lenses at this point. We would suggest a particular lens only after a detailed eye examination and on what we feel is the best available lens for you at any given point in time. Of course, you must know that the cataract lens price list varies quite significantly depending upon the lens chosen. The cataract lens price varies considerably amongst the different lenses. The cost of Alcon Acrysof IQ and technis are somewhat similar. Multifocal lenses are much more expensive, and trifocals are the most costly.

We have mentioned Indian brands as the last three, which does not mean they are inferior.

What is the difference between Indian and Foreign Lenses?

Both Indian and Foreign lenses are excellent. Indian lens manufacturing has picked up only in the last decade, and I am sure in the next decade would be considered at par with any lens in the market. There are specific differences, however.

Cost – The cataract lens price varies significantly between Indian and foreign lenses. Indian lenses are much cheaper, so cataract packages with Indian lenses are cheaper.
Some of the lenses are of different materials – Some materials are better for the eye than others.
Some of the lenses have different shapes, and some doctors are comfortable with some lenses compared to others.

So which is the best cataract lens?

As mentioned, this is a frequent question we get asked. I will start with an analogy. If someone were to ask you which is the best car available in the market, what would your answer be? Would your answer be the same as someone else in the family? I am guessing not. The reason is that it depends on so many factors and so too with lenses.

Each lens has its advantages or disadvantages, and there is no perfect lens.

Following are the factors which help in deciding which lens would be suitable for someone:

  1. The cost of the surgery package, which in turn depends on the cataract lens price.
  2. Associated retinal or diabetic eye disease
  3. Patients need to be glass free for both distance and near
  4. If patients have astigmatism in their current glasses
  5. Having an abnormally high power in their everyday glasses.

So, unfortunately, there is no one correct answer for this question. One has to choose a lens based on many things. Your doctor will help you, so don't worry.

How should I choose which cataract lens would be best for me?

After understanding the pros and cons of different cataract lenses, these would be the steps to follow.

  1. Your doctor will give you a choice of cataract lenses suitable for your eye.
  2. Think about what do you want. Would you like to be glass-free? On the other hand, would you want to wear glasses after your cataract surgery?
  3. Based on what you want, choose a lens.
  4. Once that is done, then look at the price. Is this something you can afford? If yes, then the decision is made.
  5. If not, then think of the previous lens amongst all those offered. And in that fashion, keep going lower till you are happy with the lens and the price.

You should know that lens choice will not increase or decrease cataract surgery complications apart from PCO.
