Cataract Specialist

After completing his Master of Surgery degree in Ophthalmology from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, He did a Fellowship from the Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, and followed it up with an MBA in International Healthcare and Hospital Management from the Frankfurt School of Business, Germany.

He worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Sankara Nethralaya for 10 years and was in charge of a tertiary eye hospital in Saint Thomas Mount.

During his stint in Nethralaya, he was involved in a pilot project with IIT Madras that involved designing a mobile operating theatre on a bus so as to help people who did not have the wherewithal to visit a base hospital for Cataract surgery.

He has performed sight saving surgeries in multiple countries in Asia and Africa, and was instrumental in setting up a superspecialty Eye hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

He has attended numerous national and international conferences and presented papers and videos of his work.

He is currently Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Sri Lakshminarayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Puducherry, Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at Apollo Spectra, and M N Eye Hospitals, Chennai, and has now started his own Center, Dr. Baratan’s THEIA, powered by Eye Solutions.

His areas of interest are Innovations in Phacoemulsification, Refractive Cataract surgery, Femtosecond LASIK and Cataract surgery, Intraocular Contact Lenses, Surgical education and training in the latest state-of-the-art Cataract surgery techniques, Research and development of cost-effective methods of Healthcare delivery in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Honours: Honourable mentions from the Government of Botswana for successfully completing a Cataract surgery campaign wherein nearly 2000 surgeries were performed in 40 operating days. A citation from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras for the successful completion of nearly 600 surgeries in the MobileEye Surgery Unit built jointly by IIT-M and Sankara Nethralaya.
